Stella B. Sheffler

Stella B. (Piwinsky) Sheffler, 95, of New Alexandria passed away on Monday, June 15, 2026 at St. Anne Home in Greensburg. 

She was born on February 15, 1931, in Salemville to the late John and Mary (Sorufka) Piwinsky.  Stella graduated from Latrobe High School in 1949 and was a member of Saint James Catholic Church in New Alexandria and the Rosary Altar Society.  After graduation, Stella worked at G.C. Murphy Co. in Latrobe.  Stella became a stay-at-home mom who was an excellent cook and enjoyed pressure canning vegetables from the garden.  She loved babysitting her grandchildren when they were young and vacationing with her daughter and sisters.   She especially enjoyed going to the Dairy Queen.   

Stella was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Eugene “Red” Sheffler in 1979 and siblings Wanda Macharyas, Walter “Bill” Piwinsky, Josephine Cecchini, and Sophie McIntyre.  Stella was the last surviving member of her family. 

She is survived by daughters, Mary Ann Coulston (Larry), Judy Smith (Tad), and sons Stanley M. Sheffler (Debra), Joseph Sheffler (Cathy), and John R. Sheffler (Carol).  Grandchildren Janice Citeroni (Branden), Joanna Sheffler, Michael Sheffler, Dr. Rachel Sheffler (fiancé Dustin), Alexandra Sheffler (fiancé Wyatt), Ross Sheffler (Kristen), Patrick Sheffler (fiancé Brian), Daniel Sheffler (Elizabeth), Andrew Sheffler (Amanda), and Tiffany Shrum.  Great-grandchildren Zayne, Gemma, Jace and another on the way.     Stella is also survived by brother-in-law George Sheffler (Eunice), and sister-in-law Doris Hugus. 

The family would like to extend special thanks to caregivers Sue and Vernice who helped care for their mother at home and to the staff at St. Anne Home and Heartland Hospice who cared for Stella in her final years.

Family and friends will be received Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at P. David Newhouse Funeral Home, 215 Church Street, New Alexandria, PA 15670.    A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, June 19, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, 306 Saint James Lane, New Alexandria, PA 15670.  EVERYONE IS ASKED TO GO DIRECTLY TO THE CHURCH.  Interment will follow at Calvary Hill Cemetery, Unity Township.
