Richard Van Essen, 66, of Youngstown, formerly of New Alexandria, passed away Friday, May 13, 2016. He was born Oct. 10, 1949, in Rochester, N.Y., son of the late Willem and Jennie Van Essen. He was a graduate of Avon Central High School in Avon, N.Y., and of Alfred State College of Technology Vocational School in Wellsville, N.Y. Richard was the owner and operator of S&R Supply, an autobody supply company, which serviced a multitude of independent auto body repair shops throughout Western Pennsylvania. Richard was an active member in the New Alexandria Lions Club and spent more than 10 years involved in the Demolition Derbies held each summer. Richard will be missed by his wife, Susan (Brown) Van Essen; his son, Christopher Van Essen and his wife, Katie, of Verona; his daughter, Katelyn Van Essen, of Washington, DC; his sister, Aartje (Van Essen) de Waard and her husband, Klaas, of Avon, N.Y.; his sister, Wilma (Van Essen) Burke and her husband, Peter, also of Avon, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
