Nelson Herbert Gundy Sr.

Nelson Herbert Gundy Sr., 89, of New Alexandria, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, in the home of his son and daughter-in-law in New Alexandria. Born May 2, 1922, in New Alexandria, he was a son of the late John and Mary Krych Gundy. He retired from Blairsville Westinghouse after 32 years of service as a pipefitter. He was a member of The United Presbyterian Church of Blairsville. He also belonged to Blairsville F&AM 355 Acacia Lodge and IBEW Westinghouse Metals Plant of Blairsville. He was a devoted hunter for 65 years and a member and supporter of the Blairsville Sportsman's Association. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather, as well as a friend. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater and attained the rank of sergeant. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John F. and Albert; sisters, Beryle, Sally, Peggy and Edith; and his first wife, Rene (Hoeppel), whom he met and married in Germany while serving in the U.S. Occupation. He is survived by his wife, Betty L. Gundy, of New Alexandria; sons, Nelson Herbert Gundy Jr. and wife, Jeanne, of New Alexandria, and G. David Gundy and wife, Cheryl, of Lock Haven; brothers and sisters, Paul Gundy and Ella (Henry) Wodowski, both of Blairsville, and Robert (Karen) Gundy, of Crossville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Jillian, Kyle, Adam and Steve; and great-grandchildren, Autumn, Claudia and Ellie. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, corner of Church and Washington streets, New Alexandria. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in The United Presbyterian Church of Blairsville with the Rev. Timothy Monroe officiating. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church.
