Michael Assini Obituary

Michael J. Assini, 82, of Latrobe, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, in Select Specialty Hospital, of Latrobe. He was born in May 1929, in New Alexandria, a son of the late Angelo M. and Maria (Constantine) Assini. As a sergeant in the Air Force, Michael served in the Korean War, 83rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron at Paine Air Force Base in Everett, Wash. Prior to retirement, Michael had been employed by the Bell Telephone Company of Greensburg. He was a member of St. James Parish of New Alexandria, a member of the American Legion Post 652 of New Alexandria, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Latrobe. Mike served as a former president of the New Alexandria Lions Club and was presiding mayor of New Alexandria in 1976 during the town's 100th year celebration. Along with his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph D. Assini. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth V. (Vucish) Assini; two children, daughter, Beverly (Assini) Hall and her husband, Craig, of Pittsburgh, and son, Michael J. Assini II and his fiancee, Sandra DeMier, of Cranberry. Michael is also survived by two grandchildren, Ashley (Hall) Oleszewski and Ryan, of Maryland, and Zachary Hall and fiancee, Kristen LoGrasso, of Chicago; and the newest member of the family, great-grandson, Lucas Oleszewski. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, 215 Church St., New Alexandria. www.newhousefuneralhome.com. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the P. David Newhouse Funeral Home. Military honors will be accorded by the combined Blairsville American Legion and Blairsville VFW Memorial Honors Detail and Captain Ryan Oleszewski of the Army.
