Matthew Frank "Matt" Salandro

Matthew Frank "Matt" Salandro, 59, of Crabtree, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021, at home, surrounded by loved ones. He was born Aug. 28, 1961, in Latrobe, to the late Russell and Elizabeth (Kikalo) Salandro. He was a master florist through FTD and the owner of Matt's Designs. He was a member of St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church. He greatly enjoyed the annual Our Lady of Mount Caramel Festival, loved the Christmas season, baking and trips to the casino. He touched the hearts of so many and was one-of-a-kind. He was the guy you always figured would go on forever, and while this isn't the case, Matt was taken far too soon. Matt had an entrepreneurial spirit and did whatever he wanted to do, until he grew tired of it, moved on and never looked back. He will be missed by more than he will ever know. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Robert Mark Salandro; a sister, Francine Salandro; a niece, Kristina McGee; and a nephew, Anthony Walters. He is survived by his spouse, Dean Bretzel; five siblings, Jerry (Melissa) Salandro, Roxann (Mark) Walters, Russell (Joann) Salandro, Rick (Diane) Salandro and Lanie (Gary) Walker; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Betty Bretzel; sister-in-law, Maryann (Mike) Bingey; sister-in-law, Barb (George) Szczerba; brother-in-law, James Bretzel Jr.; sister-in-law, Traci (Brian) Dixon; a special cousin, B.J. Zacur, who remained by his side; a special friend, Sandy; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; the DeFabo family, who treated him as family; and Molly, his dog and companion. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, at the P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, 215 Church St., New Alexandria, PA 15670, 724-668-2248. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, at St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church, with Father Justin Matro, O.S.B. as celebrant.
