Mary Alice Kern, 82, of New Alexandria, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg, surrounded by her family. She was born Dec. 6, 1930, in Greensburg, daughter of Walter Knoblock Young and Martha Murphy Young. She was a housewife and loving mother. She especially loved her grandchildren. Mary Alice was a member of the Community United Presbyterian Church of New Alexandria where she was a deacon. She was co-founder of the Derry Historical Society, a former Derry Area School Board Member, a former board member of the Westmoreland County Intermediate Unit, was an instructor at WCCC, where she taught a caneing class, was a volunteer at the New Alexandria Library and co-authored the History of Derry book. She was also the Judge of Elections Westmoreland County and the Saltsburg Herb Society. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver J. Kern in 2008; and two brothers, Walter and Glen Young. She is survived by her three children, Barbara Kern Bush, of Pittsburgh; and a son-in-law, Bill Bush, of Saltsburg, Walter (Buzz) Kern and wife, Rose, of New Alexandria, and Allan L. Kern, of New Alexandria; grandchildren, Casey Bush, Jessica Bush Warman and husband, Matthew Colin, Ashley Kern and Zachery Kern and Rebecca Kern; and two great-grandchildren, Estella Jane Warman and Esme Alice Warman. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, corner of Church and Washington Sts., New Alexandria. www.newhousefuneralhome.com.
