Marian Phillips Obituary

Marian C. Phillips, 97 1/2, of New Alexandria, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, in her residence surrounded by her family. She was born Dec. 6, 1916, in Sandy Creek, daughter of Samuel L. Burge and Barbara Bey. She retired from Greensburg Salem District, where she was a baker. Prior to that, she worked at Federal Labs in Tunnelton where she was a Rosie the Riveter during the World War II effort. Marian was a member of the United Methodist Church of New Alexandria. She was an original member of the 500 club of New Alexandria. She loved working for the church. She was an avid bingo player and loved going to the local casinos. She also was proud of her large collection of salt and pepper shakers amassing over 800 of them. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1996; three brothers, William, Wakefield and Edgar; and an infant sister, Mildred. She is survived by two sons, Joseph L. Phillips and wife, Audrey, and William F. Phillips and wife, Donna C., both of New Alexandria; grandchildren, Jodi, Brian S., William L., Darlene R. Harvan , of New Alexandria and Randy Phillips of Latrobe; great-grandchildren, Amanda, Samantha, Jason, Jennifer, Zachary, Nichole, Joseph and Robert; and a great great-grandson, Colin Hymes. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, corner of Church and Washington Sts., New Alexandria, in charge of arrangements. www.newhousefuneralhome.com. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 25, 2014, in the United Methodist Church of New Alexandria with Pastor Rhea Summit of the United Methodist Church in New Alexandria. Burial will be in Twin Valley Memorial Park Inc., Delmont. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of New Alexandria.
