Joseph Yurigan Obituary

Joseph Norman Yurigan, 87, of New Alexandria, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, in Loyalhanna Care Center, Latrobe. He was born April 18, 1927, in Turtle Creek, to Joseph and Martha Yurigan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Shirley. He resided in New Alexandria for 65 years and was a member of Community United Presbyterian Church and Scottish Rite of Free Masonry in the Valley of Pittsburgh. Joseph was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served in Pearl Harbor on the USS Langley. Prior to retirement, he was a metallurgist for Westinghouse. Joseph valued and cherished the time he spent in a variety of community roles, such as businessman, oldest lifelong member of the New Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department, New Alexandria Little League Baseball coach for many years, Boy Scout leader and member of the High Acres 4-H Club and American Quarter Horse Association. He served as an excellent role model for many young men. Joseph was a Standard Breed Harness Horse owner who admired his favorite horses, Triple J's, Sly and Apple Cider Hanover. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, taking his wife, Shirley, to their favorite dinner spots and his well-known golf ball business. He is survived by his three children, Dr. Joseph James Yurigan and his wife and loving daughter-in-law, Patricia, of New Alexandria, Debbie Blizzard and her husband, Bernie, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Bonnie Seevers, of Burlington, N.C. He will be sadly missed by his beloved grandchildren, Dr. Joseph James Jr. and Jamie Yurigan, of New Alexandria, and Richard and Renee Seevers, of Burlington, N.C.; nieces and nephews; and his feline buddy, Max. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, at the P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, corner of Church and Washington streets, New Alexandria. Masonic and fireman services will also be accorded between 7 to 9 p.m. visitation. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014, in the funeral home with the Rev. R. Bruce Maxwell and the Rev. Kathleen Shirey co-officiating. Interment will follow in Church Hill Cemetery, Turtle Creek, where graveside military services will be accorded by American Legion Post 980 of Plum Borough.
