John R. "Jack" Widdowson, 84, of New Alexandria, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010, in Select Specialty Hospital , Latrobe, with his family and friends by his side. Born Dec. 31, 1925, in Indiana, Pa. , he was a son of the late Royden Carlysle Widdowson and Harriet Louise McDowell Widdowson. Jack was a retired electrician out of IBEW Local No. 5 in Pittsburgh . He was a member of Community United Presbyterian Church of New Alexandria. He also was a charter member of the F&AM in Glen Park, Ind. He was a member of the Robert C. Dornon American Legion Post 652 in New Alexandria, where he was commander for 40 years. He was a life member of VFW Post 1989 in Indiana, Pa. Jack, with the help of a few other men, started the New Alexandria Little League, not only organizing but also building the field to play on. He was a member of the USS Howard Gilmore Association and a member of the Navy Club in Lebanon , Pa. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a seaman second class electricians mate. He was on the USS Howard Gilmore, where he was a plank owner. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Asa Alburtus Widdowson; and a sister, Barbara W. Heister. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Delores George Widdowson, of New Alexandria; three children, John R. Widdowson Jr. and wife, Linda, of Seward, Barbara C. Kareis and husband, Richard, of Augusta, Ga., and Col. Bridget S. Widdowson, of New Alexandria; five grandchildren, Susan E. Mackwick, Richard A., Christine N., Matthew C. and Jonathan P. Kareis; five great-grandchildren, Madeline, Hugh, Tanner, Abby and Lily; two sisters, Betty L. Johnson, of California, and Minnell Spaw, of Philadelphia; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, corner of Church and Washington streets, in New Alexandria. Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Community United Presbyterian Church of New Alexandria with the Rev. Clifford Buell officiating. (Everyone please go directly to the church.)
