Joan P. Ebert Retired Chemist, 4-H Leader, Group Founder pix-f-s Joan P. Ebert, 95, of New Alexandria passed away Monday, Sept. 5, 2016, in her home with her caregiver Carol Hazlett. Born Aug. 13, 1921, in Jeannette, Joan was the daughter of the late Joseph and Maria (Bertolino) Pignocco. Joan was a homemaker and housewife. She formerly worked for the Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., as a chemist. Joan graduated from Jeannette High School in 1938, Seton Hill College in 1942 with a bachelor of science in chemistry and received her master's degree in chemistry from Catholic University, Washington, D.C., in 1944. She met her husband in 1945 after World War II and returned to Derry Township in 1949 to raise her family. Joan was a member of St. James Catholic Church of New Alexandria, where she also belonged to the Rosary Altar Society. She was a former member of the Derry School Board and president of the local PTA in New Alexandria. She was a 4-H leader for 35 years. She founded the Keystone Homemakers of the Penn State Extension Service. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends. She was an accomplished seamstress, making many wedding dresses and prom gowns. Along with her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Ebert, in 1992. She is survived by her six children, John and wife Cathy Ebert of New Alexandria, Mary and husband John Lindh of Ligonier, William and wife Martha Ebert of New Alexandria, Richard and wife Diane Ebert of Blairsville, Joanne and husband Ray Loose of Tyrone and James and wife Jennifer Ebert of Mechanicsville, Virginia; 16 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 until 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, in P. David Newhouse Funeral Home, 215 Church St., New Alexandria. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, in St. James Catholic Church, New Alexandria, with Monsignor Larry J. Kulick, JCL, VG, as celebrant. Burial will be in Twin Valley Memorial Park Inc., Delmont.
