James L. Elder, 66, of New Alexandria, died peacefully Saturday, March 3, 2012, listening to his oldies, in Select Specialty Hospital, Latrobe. Born July 15, 1945, in Latrobe, he was a son of the late John Knox Elder and Elizabeth Sloskey Elder. Jim was the owner of the former J&J Auto Sales in New Alexandria. He was a former member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of New Alexandria. He was treasurer of the Salem Gun Club and former treasurer of the Salem Ukrainian Club. He enjoyed selling cars and dealing with the many friends that he made over the years. He also enjoyed going fishing and camping. Jim was a veteran, having served in the Air Force during the Vietnam Era. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas C. Elder; and two sisters, Mary Anna Uptegraph and Helen Seifert. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Janice Gaffney Elder, of New Alexandria; two children, Jason, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jamie Fowler and husband, Steve, of Pasadena, Md.; a brother, John Knox Elder and wife, Kitty, of Latrobe; sisters, Nancy Vincze and husband, John, of New Alexandria, Betty Finley and husband, William, of Lancaster, and Linda Monico and husband, Edward, of Ligonier; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, corner of Church and Washington streets, in New Alexandria. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with the Rev. A. Wayne Duffield, M. Div., officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, New Alexandria. www.newhousefuneralhome.com.
