James E. Ball, 76, of New Alexandria, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, in Excela Health Latrobe Hospital . He was born July 2, 1934, in Greensburg , a son of the late George R. and Elizabeth Hudson Ball. Jim retired from Teledyne Vasco Co., in Latrobe, where he worked on the rolling mill. He was a member of Community United Presbyterian Church of New Alexandria. He also was a former assistant chief of the New Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department. Jim was very active in community service. He was a former coach of the Derry Area Midget Football League. He graduated from Greensburg High School , where he was class president and a letterman on the football team. He went to Clemson University , where he played football. He served in the Army in the Enlisted Reserve Corps. He attained the rank of specialist 4th class. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his son, James Lindsay Ball; a grandson, David Slezak; and a brother, William. He is survived by three children, Tim Ball, Jami Slezak and Eric Pruitt, and Jacki Latimer and husband, Dean, all of New Alexandria; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Steel and husband, Jack, of New Alexandria, and Lois Ross and husband, Art, of Latrobe; and his companion, Janet Sutton, of Derry, and her children, Rex, Barry and Matthew Sutton. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at the P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, corner of Church and Washington streets, in New Alexandria, where services will begin at 8 p.m. with Monsignor Lawrence T. Persico officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery , New Alexandria. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department, 212 Gay St. , New Alexandria, PA 15670.
