Andrew Phillips

Andrew Phillips, 91, of New Alexandria passed away on Friday, April6, 2018 at his home. He was Born November 26, 1926, in house # 404 in Hannastown, PA the son of the late John and Anna (Stanka) Phillips. Andy worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Pitcairn at the age of 16. At the age of 19 he joined US Army having served during WWII. After discharge he worked at the coal mines in Hannastown and Salemville. Andy retired from the Toyad Corp., Latrobe in 1989 after 29 Years of service. Andy was a past member of the New Alexandria Ukrainian Club, a life time member of Old Crabtree Sportsman Club, and a member of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, New Alexandria where he had served as President for many years. He enjoyed polka music, playing the lottery, gardening, and any time spent with family and friends whether on the phone or in person. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters Anna, Kathryn, Mary, Helen, and Margaret, six brothers Joseph, Walter, John, Frank, and two infant brothers. Andy is survived by his wife and caregiver Elizabeth "Libby" (Laich) Phillips. They were married in Latrobe at St. Mary's Church on June 30, 1947. Son Andrew R. Phillips and wife Mary Ann of New Alexandria; daughter Patricia Stanko and husband Melvin of Slickville; one brother Mike Phillips and wife Dorothy of Crabtree; one brother-in-law Frank Laich of Latrobe; three grandchildren Kimberly Lauffer and husband Howard, Chad Stanko and girlfriend Carolyn, and Melary Stanko; Special Niece Betty Nemchik; grand-dogs Garth and Mia; numerous grand-cats, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Family will receive friends from 3-7 pm on Monday April 9, 2018, at the P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, 215 Church St., New Alexandria, newhousefuneralhome.com. Parastas service will be held at 5pm Monday in the funeral home. Additional viewing Tuesday April 10, 2018 11AM till time of service. Divine Liturgy will be held at 12 noon Tuesday April 10, 2018, at the funeral home with Rev. Yaroslav Koval as officaint. Interment will follow at the Calvary Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, P.O. Box 35, New Alexandria, PA 15670 Please write "Andy" in the memo.
